Tom Holland’s Spider-Man generated lots of buzz for the 2016 box office powerhouse that was Captain America: Civil War, so it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise at just how much the new trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming leans on the Avengers connection. The presence of Tony Stark in the film does make this feel a bit like Iron Man 4, and I’m while I’m excited for that inevitable (yes, it’s very cool) crossover, I’m also curious to see how well this movie will stand on its own.
That being said, there is lots to admire here. The visual flair from director Jon Watts is nice, and Holland’s Spidey looks really cool. The presence of Michael Keaton is always a great thing, especially when the Weinsteins aren’t holding his movie back from the public. Personally, any Spider-Man movie has a lot to live up to when compared to the masterpiece that is Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2, but this looks like a lot of fun.
This trailer is very spoiler-heavy, so proceed with caution. You know you’re going to see the movie anyway. Watch the trailer if you want to. We aren’t the boss of you.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is directed by Jon Watts (Cop Car) and stars Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Zendaya, Jon Favreau, Donald Glover, Tyne Daly, Marisa Tomei, and Robert Downey Jr. It opens July 7.
