The Planet of the Apes reboot continues to surprise me with just how engaging and effective it is. While I can’t help but wonder where and how the franchise can go story-wise, I’m very excited to rejoin Caesar in the forthcoming War for the Planet of the Apes. The compelling, emotional storytelling at hand as well as the incredible visual effects on display has made me look forward to each new installment more and more.
I’m already on the record that I feel the writing here has been nothing short of compelling and Shakespearian. And this latest trailer, which is epic in its scope and conflict, almost has an air of finality about it. I’m very excited to see where this franchise has gone by the time the end credits roll. Given that Dawn of the Planet of the Apes screenwriter Mark Bomback is back, I think there are some great things in store for us here.
Speaking of returning faces, Matt Reeves is back as well! This of course would account for the gorgeous visual flair on display. New characters are padding out the world more and more, but I wonder how palpable the absence of Toby Kebbel’s Koba will impact the film as a whole. Caesar’s a family man, you know. The presence Woody Harrelson could mean a better villain than we’ve had in the past.
War for the Planet of the Apes opens July 14.
