Maybe I’m just feeling morbid this month, who knows. But for the second week in a row we’re going to be discussing filmic death in this column, this time focusing on a particularly nasty way to die: being cut in half. Modern mainstream movies seem to have a fascination with the way the human body seems to divide so cleanly between top and bottom. Well actually, as we’ll discover below, it’s not always cleanly. But it does make for bloody, good CGI (in most cases), and is always memorable. With that in mind, it’s time to discuss some of the most memorable moments of character bifurcation. Welcome to the “Half-time Show”! (Yes, I went there.)

Among his many acting talents, two particular traits of Samuel L. Jackson stand out above the rest: (1) his penchant for memorable cursing tirades, and (2) his capacity for getting killed in a memorable way. Jackson is the “Bill Pullman in Independence Day” of movie die-ers: he refuses to go quietly in the night. Even when his death is offscreen it’s usually under circumstances that make it unforgettable. But which is the most memorable of his many film demises? Well, that’s a hard one. You see, choosing a favorite film death of Jackson is like choosing a favorite fast-food hamburger: they’re all disgusting/delicious, but ultimately it comes down to personal taste. That’s why I’ve compiled a list of MY top ten Samuel L. Jackson causes of death and expounded on them below. Your list may (read: will) differ, so let me in on your favorites in the comments below!
