The Matrix? Really? Loved it, but no where near the best sci fi ever

  • Chadd

Love the picture selection of 2001. Truly a masterpiece in every way.

  • HK

Un-friggin’-acceptable! ‘The Matrix’ is a genre-defining film that still continues to influence contemporary sci-fi films not just in terms of visual style and effects, but also in terms of themes, content, etc. It is just as entertaining - if not more so - than T2, and significantly more nuanced. How A.I. is occupying that slot is mind-boggling. I’m eager to hear your reasoning behind this…

  • Christopher Misch

@Chadd Yes sir, you guys really seem the love ‘The Matrix’ as it showed up on an impressive 81% of all ballots. Indeed, 2001 is one of those films worthy of its hype. I love the image too.

  • Chadd

All hyperbole aside, I agree the Matrix was a good film.

  • Chadd

Ah yes, I didn’t think how you compiled the list. I have it in my top 10.

  • Christopher Misch

@HK The far reaching influence of ‘The Matrix’ is definitely worthy of note and it made my short list because of that, but I personally felt obliged to include films like ‘La Jetée’, ‘AI’, and ‘Gattaca’, as they had more impact on me personally, as fan of science fiction and a fan of cinema in general.

As for ‘AI’ specially. I am of the thought that this may very well be Spielberg’s greatest work. Yes, I know at first glance this may sound absurd, but it’s the truth. Spielberg’s ability to combine his sentimentality with Kibrick’s decent desolation provides for a unique viewing experience. And that final act! How can we forget that final act? It’s a thing of shear beauty between a mother and child. Sure, it’s not real but the strength of that bond is still felt.

  • Christopher Misch

You did haha! For next week’s Top Ten I’ve devised a points system so that will be even more accurate.

  • HK

Fair enough. I approached my Top 10 list from the angle of cultural significance. In that respect, I thought that The Matrix was perfect as the quintessential allegory of modernity. And bullet-time blew my mind :)

  • Christopher Misch

Bullet-time blew all of our minds. :)

i’m not a big sci-fi nut but i’ve seen some of these. i love alien, inception, matrix, and terminator 2 (good pick!).

  • Christopher Misch

I can’t claim to be a big sci-fi enthusiast either, but it’s a cinematic genre I’ve always been interested in.

  • Alex Naydenov

Glad to see some A.I. love. That film is definitely one of the best of its genre. The ending still destroys me everytime I see it.

  • Christopher Misch

Glad to see some fellow support for ‘AI’. I think sometimes people don’t understand the significance of the last act and don’t understand how gloomy it really is.

  • Jason McCrank

Some (goofy) people are still under the assumption that there are “aliens” in A.I.

You know that I love to see “Inception” there. ;)

  • Christopher Misch

Just that thought of Aliens in ‘AI” still boggles my mind, Jason.

I love seeing there too. :)

I’m a huge BLADE RUNNER, T2 and THE MATRIX FAN. I’d also like to suggest ALIEN, ALIENS and Danny Boyle’s SUNSHINE. Recently I also enjoyed DISTRICT 9, MOON and INCEPTION.

  • Christopher Misch

Danny Boyle’s Sunshine is an interesting film to me. The first 2/3s of the film were superb, but I despised the Pinbacker subplot, which took the film in a different direction than I was expecting.
