Clip of the Day: Tangled, ‘I’ve Got A Dream’

by

Today’s clip comes from one of my favorite films from last year. After the precipitous drop in quality from Disney Animation earlier in the decade (with Emperor’s New Groove and Lilo and Stitch being the only bright spots), the Disney we all know and love finally came back in the last couple of years with The Princess and the Frog and with their 50th feature length animated film, Tangled. Yes, one could argue that this is Disney formula, pure and simple. But I’ve never been one to dismiss formula. Just because you have all the elements doesn’t mean you still can’t screw it up either in preparation or while creating it. It’s only when you see how incredible it can be when prepared and served properly do you realize how well said formula works. And this is a prime example of Disney’s formula working perfectly to create something that I’m genuinely shocked to hear people say they don’t like it. But while I agree that this film deserved it’s Oscar nominations, I do feel that the wrong song got nominated. “I See The Light” is a fine enough song, and it’s great to discover that Zachary Levi (aka. Chuck) can sing, but it was a little too on the nose for my tastes. For me, the real showstopper is the “I Got A Dream” number that takes place half-way through the movie. It’s such a fun, funny, lyrically complex song that harkens back to the glory days of Howard Ashman. I dare you not to have a huge smile on your face by the time you get to Vladimir’s unicorns.
