Look out people, we are in full Awards Season gear. Yesterday the Screen Actors Guild (check out our coverage here) came out with their nominees for the year, and today the Golden Globes has followed suit with their picks.

Although ignored by SAG, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association was sure to show some love to Selma, with four nominations, including Best Picture, Director for Ava DuVernay, and Best Actor for David Oyelowo. Boyhood and Birdman continued to be the most admired with five and seven nominations respectfully. Perhaps thanks to its designation as a Musical or Comedy, The Grand Budapest Hotel pulled in a solid four nominations, tying it with The Theory of Everything, The Imitation Game, and Gone Girl (didn’t see that coming).

With the Golden Globes Musical and Comedy categories, we are often treated to some surprising film recognition. This year’s crop included nominations for Big Eyes, Into the Woods (for more than just Meryl Streep), Annie, and Pride. Left out of the running however were Snowpiercer (no surprise there), Unbroken, and American Sniper, which all may be effectively out of any real Oscar consideration at this point. Also, even though critic groups love her, Marion Cotillard continues to go ignored by the big voting bodies.

In the television field, the HFPA is certainly more tapped into what’s new and fresh, completely ignoring both Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory. Fargo got plenty of love (finally for Alison Tolman), as well as Orange is the New Black, House of Cards, Downton Abbey (ugh), The Normal Heart, and Olive Kitteridge. One of the biggest surprises was the praise HFPA heaped on The CW’s Jane the Virgin, racking up three nominations, and shocking everyone that HFPA had even an awareness of The CW as a network. Mad Men continued to be ignored, along with Masters of Sex and Parks and Recreation and the HFPA showed that it still has a strange fascination with Ray Donovan. New shows entering the mix included HBO’s Silicon Valley (with one nomination) and Amazon’s Transparent (with two nominations).
