My Life Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn (2015)
In 2013, Nicholas Winding Refn’s Only God Forgives was met with equal doses of love and hate, becoming one of the polarizing films of all time. A huge portion of one of our ProjectionCast episodes was dedicated to the film, which continues to be debated and discussed by moviegoers around the world. Now, an entirely new and far less controversial layer has been added to the discussion with the arrival of My Life Directed by Nicholas Winding Refn. In 2012, Refn and his family moved to Bangkok for six months while he shot the film. It was the first time his family had accompanied him on a shoot, and Refn’s wife Liv Corfixen decided to film her husband every step of the way.
As I wrote in my review for the film following its premiere at Fantastic Fest back in September, one’s opinion on Refn’s film should not influence whether or not you want to see this film. This is essential viewing for any lover of cinema, as we are given a one-of-a-kind look into the mind of a unique director, his process, his doubts and the effects making a movie has on his home life. It’s funny, touching, scary, and stressful, but it is one of the most intimate and honest looks at filmmaking you will ever see.
