With Out of the Furnace and Crazy Heart under his belt, Scott Cooper is quickly cementing himself as an exciting directorial voice that is particularly adept at directing actors. His latest film, Black Mass, looks to be his biggest and most ambitious one yet. An unrecognizable and downright terrifying Johnny Depp stars as notorious gangster Whitey Bulger. Based on a book by Dick Lehr and Gerard Gerard O’Neill, the film features a dynamite supporting cast that includes the likes of Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kevin Bacon, Jesse Plemons, Peter Sarsgaard, Dakota Johnson and Corey Stoll. Black Mass is set for a September 18 theatrical release.
John Connolly and James “Whitey” Bulger grew up together on the streets of South Boston. Decades later, in the late 1970s, they would meet again. By then, Connolly was a major figure in the FBI’s Boston office and Whitey had become godfather of the Irish Mob. What happened between them - a dirty deal to trade secrets and take down Boston’s Italian Mafia in the process - would spiral out of control, leading to murders, drug dealing, racketeering indictments, and, ultimately, to Bulger making the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted List.
