Though it’s occupied DVD and Blu-Ray shelves for some time now, the release of Drive on demand this week is a sure sign of the escalating influence the distribution means is beginning to accrue with bigger, more popular titles. The remainder of the week’s releases play second fiddle—let’s be honest, most things do—but still manage to offer a good deal that’s worth the investment of your time. Independent films from both sides of the Atlantic, an older sequel to an all-time great, and a pair of foreign imports tapping into timely issues: whatever takes your fancy, there’s sure to be something here to suit your tastes.

The more weeks go by, the more convinced I become that the true beneficiaries of an increasingly online movie-watching public are documentary filmmakers. Released this week are two remarkable films that, without the benefit of streaming services, I dare say I might never have known existed. After the dizzying stampede of titles that gushed forth last week, we have here very few high profile movies to speak of, a disappointing outing for Jason Statham and an even less impressive one for Dario Argento probably the most immediately familiar of the nine films below. You know the drill by now: read on to find what’s worth your time, and don’t forget to report back with your own findings.

It seems somebody over at Netflix may have been reading this column; perhaps in an effort to make up for the previous two weeks of less than stellar new releases, this week sees over 200 new films added to the site’s catalogue. Alas, it’s beyond me to cover that many movies in just seven days (much as I might have tried), so I’ve tried to pick out some of the most promising titles among the latest batch. The addition of three Roger Corman adaptations of Edgar Allen Poe’s tales is a particular standout, making the entirety of Corman’s acclaimed series now available on demand. Three movies from the much-missed Sidney Lumet offer a further highlight, including two of his most acclaimed masterpieces. Dig in and get watching; there’s never been a better reason to have a subscription.

Another week, another horde of new streaming titles that might never have found an audience without the wonders of video on demand. Unfortunately in the case of several of these, they never deserved an audience in the first place. Underwhelming documentaries; sub-par horrors; stiflingly average indies: it seems internet streaming was almost made solely to cater to these categories of film. As ever, though, there are a few diamonds to be found in the rough; read on to discover the few among this week’s latest VOD titles that deserve your attention.

It seems death, destruction, and disorder are the primary constituents of this week’s latest streams, from a pair of documentaries on the folly of human brutality to a smattering of indie dramas tackling the end of life, or indeed of all life. Fret not, though, it’s not entirely doom and gloom, and there are even a couple of comedies to brighten your day at the end of it all. With the latest from veterans like Werner Herzog and Robert Redford, award-winning fare from Cannes, and tales of latter-day sexual liberation, there really is something for everyone this week, so read on to discover what tickles your fancy, and be sure to let us know your thoughts afterward.

For better or for worse, everything around us has been touched by the digital revolution; it’s hard to think of a single aspect of modern life not in some way impacted by the omnipresent behemoth that is the internet. It might have taken them an embarrassingly long time to get here, but it looks as though the powers that be in the world of movies may finally be catching up with us, as streaming services seem to grow almost exponentially. Now many films are debuting online before in theatres, seasoned DVD collectors are opting for the cheaper and more convenient allure of video on demand, and a whole new world of titles that might never have found their way to our eyes before is suddenly available to all. But sometimes the selection can be daunting; trying to choose one film to view among a database of thousands is no mean feat, putting us in the position of a tiny audience of one in an almost infinite virtual video store. Not to worry though, Next Projection has got your back, and in this new weekly column I’ll not only be giving you the rundown on the latest movies available to stream, but also watching them and sorting the great from the awful so you don’t have to. So read on to find the hidden gems worth checking out, and be sure to share your thoughts on my findings. Happy streaming.
