gylenhaal demolition

With films like Nightcrawler, Enemy, Prisoners and the forthcoming Everest under his belt, Jake Gyllenhaal has hit an amazing career stride. While a lot of Oscar talk has surrounded his performance in Southpaw, it may be his performance in Demolition that ultimately lands him his first Oscar nomination in nine years. Given that three of director Jean-Marc Vallee’s last four films (Wild, Dallas Buyers Club, The Young Victoria) went on to see Oscar glory, it would be safe to assume so.

Gyllenhaal plays a man struggling to get his life back together after losing his wife. Demolition also stars Chris Cooper, Naomi Watts and Judah Lewis. The film is set to premiere at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival, but will not see a theatrical release until April 2016.

Synopsis:

Davis (Jake Gyllenhaal), a successful investment banker, struggles after losing his wife in a tragic car crash. Despite pressure from his father in law Phil (Chris Cooper) to pull it together, Davis continues to unravel. What starts as a complaint letter to a vending machine company turns into a series of letters revealing startling personal admissions. Davis’ letters catch the attention of customer service rep Karen (Naomi Watts) and, amidst emotional and financial burdens of her own, the two form an unlikely connection. With the help of Karen and her son Chris (Judah Lewis), Davis starts to rebuild, beginning with the demolition of the life he once knew.
