I'm from Victoria BC and love watching films from all corners of the world. I'm fascinated by interpreting films and connecting with other film lovers. I love sharp, clever dialogue (QT), beautifully shot films (The Thin Red Line) and a filmmaker who trusts the audience to put it all together and leave room for discussion (PTA).

I Am Breathing is a film about the courageous final days of Neil Platt, a young man diagnosed with motor neuron disease (MND, also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease). Neil was enjoying success on many levels when he was diagnosed: marriage, a baby boy (Oscar) and a career as an architect. As Neil puts it, MND is a life sentence. MND eventually breaks down motor controls of the body: speech, walking, swallowing, and general movement of the body. In Neil’s case he lost use of his legs first, then his hands, eventually becoming completely immobile.

Charles Bradley: Soul of America is a deeply intimate look at the life of a 62-year-old soul singer on the brink of success for the first time in his life. It’s a film about the underdog we all love to root for in America. This film may draw unfair comparisons to Oscar winner, Searching For Sugar Man. Both films share a few similarities, but each artist has a distinct voice with far different aspirations.

Fast and Furious 6 delivers massive summer action while severing any semblance of plausibility, plot and consequences. This is nothing new to the franchise, but at what point do we say, “Enough is enough?”

Justin Lin (Director) is not returning to the franchise after this film. Lin took over after a lackluster sequel, delivering a fun follow up (Tokyo Drift) that brought Fast and Furious back to race culture roots and practical stunts blended with fewer CGI shots. Lin enjoyed success proving himself as a worthy action director. He set the bar high for the next director, James Wan (Saw, Dead Silence and Insidious).

The ambiguous ending of Before Sunrise gave fans something to talk about for nine years. Did Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) reunite six months after parting ways? Would they find success together? Before Sunrise was not a massive blockbuster hit, but was successful enough to warrant a tremendous follow up to answer all of the questions above.

2 Fast 2 Furious is a much different animal when compared to the first of the franchise. The sequel relies heavily on CGI over practical stunts. I consider this the red headed stepchild of the Fast and Furious franchise. I took one for the team and watched the film with the commentary track recorded by director John Singleton. Unfortunately Singleton spent most of the time commenting, “This was fun! I like this.” He narrates the entire film without saying a lot about the production of the film.

What would you do if you met the man or woman of your dreams and you had less than 24 hours with that person? Would you reserve your feelings? Would you give in to this person without thinking about tomorrow? Richard Linklater (Director/Writer) and Kim Krizan (Writer) take this idea and run with it in Before Sunrise.

Here at Next Projection we thought it would be fun to revisit The Fast and the Furious films in anticipation for Fast and Furious 6. The franchise represents many elements of a massive Summer blockbuster: beautiful people, huge action, dangerous stunts, special effects, explosions, grand set pieces, fight scenes and characters that ooze charisma and testosterone.
